Alice Hallion, a young victorian woman, is set upon becoming a spinster.
Her older sister, Stella Hallion, has taken on the task of trying to convince Alice to get married. But Alice and Stella don't understand how far they've grown apart since they were children.
It's not just Alice's lack of compliance that keeps her from wanting to marry. Marguerite Devi, an author and spinster living at the edge of town, has been Alice's girlfriend for years (and history will say they were great friends!). Their relationship has had to be kept a secret due to the disapproval her family has towards Marguerite.
As Alice begins to understand what people mean when they call her mad, she realizes exactly how she wants her life to look.
